In his “Preface to the Second Edition” of The Selfish Gene, Dawkins says he is writing for three kinds of people: the general reader (for whom he has avoided technical language), the scientific expert (who might see something in his story that they perhaps overlooked in their more technical way of looking at things), and the student (who might find the book helpful in breaking down technical theories into everyday language).ĭawkins begins (in “Why Are People?”) by saying that Charles Darwin offered the first coherent account of why we are here-why we exist-when he formulated the theory of evolution in On the Origin of Species. He thinks this is as strange as “science fiction” but it’s actually the truth. He thinks this is quite a radical view, because it implies that we humans are “lumbering robots,” programmed by our genes to help them-the genes-survive. When I was seven, my mom took my brother and I to our first book signing of an author and cartoonist called Ziraldo. Some of the authors I enjoyed as a kid where Ruth Rocha, Ana Maria Machado, Monteiro Lobato. Growing up I loved to read, but the illustrations interested me just as much because I was drawing all the time by the age of six or seven. I must confess that I wasn’t a big fan of this part and thankfully the practice didn’t last long, but the reading did. After reading each book, my mom would make us fill out a report card describing the plot and our impressions of it. My mom would take my two brothers and I, and we would browse the shelves and pick out three books at a time, have our reading cards stamped, and go home with our treasures. Some of my fondest memories while growing up were weekly visits to the central library in my home town of Curitiba. Night Shyamalan Movie 'Old' Will Be About ![]() Dante is warned not to move further into Hell, but he is enticed by his own sin to move forward into the first layer of Hell (Limbo). In the story of Dante's Inferno, Dante awakens and is met by Virgil-his guide through Hell sent by Beatrice, the symbol of Divine Love (in the movie Beatrice could be Mike's daughter). 1408 is about Mike's journey through the 9 layers of Hell and the 7 layers of Purgatory in an attempt to reach Paradise while simultaneously dealing with the 7 stages of grief. The story follows Mike Enslin-a writer separated from his wife after losing his daughter to cancer who now seeks to debunk all stories of haunted locations in order to prove that there is no God or afterlife. This movie is clearly a spin on The Divine Comedy and tells a modern tale of Dante traversing through Inferno, Purgatorio, and Paradiso (or Hell, Purgatory, and Paradise). 1408 is a psychological horror film made in 2007 that is more concerned with ideas and thoughts than lousy jump scares.
